2.4: Outlook for Northern Ontario
Northern Ontario is a mostly rural part of Canada that often feels remote from the rest of the country. If solutions for providing broadband to this diverse region can be identified, there is still hope for other rural areas of Canada. Because of the high cost for running a fibre pipeline to a small community or rural area, that is not likely going to be an option until the cost of fibre comes down to a more reasonable level. New wireless and satellite technology that has been developed in the last two or three years may provide a less expensive way to bring broadband pipelines to sparsely populated areas of Northern Ontario. While DSL and Cable may yet be an option for some unserved communities, the same wireless and satellite technology may also provide a last mile solution for places where these traditional networks are not feasible. All of these technologies will be explored in the remainder of this thesis, and by the end enough information will be provided to help Northern Ontarians identify a potential solution for their community.
