Who lives on St. Joseph Island? There isn't just one answer to this question.
Many young families call St. Joseph Island home. It is a quiet, friendly and safe place for your family to live and grow.
The Village of Hilton Beach operates a recreation program every summer, offering swimming lessons, arts and crafts days, sports and other fun activities. In the winter there are family skating parties and snow sculpturing contests, and you can always spend a fun afternoon on the Jocelyn Ski Trails. There is always something happening on St. Joseph Island that the whole family can enjoy!
The Island is also an attractive retirement destination, with seniors' groups and weekly activities, a hospital and ambulance service, and countless services offered by the Trefry Centre in Richards Landing. There are teas, bazaars and quilt shows year round, card games, "out and about" tours, golfing tournaments... the list goes on. It is a fun and beautiful place to live out the best years of your life.
More than half of the population of St. Joseph Island is seasonal; the Island is the heart of Northern Ontario's cottage country. With our close proximity to the U.S. border, there are many Americans living on The Island in the summer.
Many people on St. Joseph Island commute to nearby Sault Ste. Marie for work, while others work in the tourism and service industries on the Island. There is plenty of opportunity in these industries, however. Entrepreneurs can likely be quite successful on St. Joseph Island.
