Garbage & Recycling

The following information addresses the various schedules, fees and types of garbage that are accepted for disposal at the landfill.

Accepted Material

Clear bags are required for curbside collection as well as for household garbage taken to the landfill.

Hazardous Waste must be taken to the Hazardous Waste Depot, 402 Fifth Line, Sault Ste. Marie. Styrofoam is considered a hazardous waste.

Landfill Hours

All Year:
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sunday: 12 Noon to 4 p.m.

Additional Hours from May 15 to Sept 15:
Wednesday: 12 Noon to 5 p.m.
Monday of a long weekend: 12 Noon to 4 p.m.

Curbside Collection

Curbside collection is available to residents based on the schedule below:

January to May: Last Saturday of the month;
June: Second and last Saturday;
July and August: Every Saturday;
September: Second and last Saturday
October to December: Last Saturday of the month.

Recycling

The following materials can be recycled:

1. Food, beverage and other metal cans – empty and rinse;
2. Aluminum foil wrap and trays – rinse and crumple;
3. All rigid plastic containers – Plastic containers coded 1 – 6 only rigid food, beverage, personal, pet care and detergent containers – remove plastic caps and lids; empty and rinse;
4. Milk and juice cartons and juice boxes – remove plastic caps, straws; empty and flatten; picked up with commingle;
5. Newspapers, inserts, magazines, phone books, paperbacks, hardcover books and household print paper – bundle together
6. Cardboard boxes – flatten and bundle; no waxed, heavily coated, oily or soiled cardboard allowed;
7. Boxboard single-layered boxes including cereal, tissue, detergent, cardboard egg cartons – remove liners and flatten

Please DO NOT recycle:

  • Glass of any kind;
  • Oily pizza boxes;
  • Styrofoam;
  • Coffee cups;
  • Diapers;
  • Toys (plastic or other);
  • Ceramics, dishes or window glass;
  • Hazardous waste, syringes or medicines;
  • Plastic pails with metal handles;
  • Oil or antifreeze jugs;
  • Paint cans
